ABSTRACT

Interactions between endophytic fungi (EFs) and their host plants range from positive to neutral to negative. The results of such interactions can vary depending on the organ of the infected host plant. EFs isolated from the leaves of some species of plants have potential for use as agents to inhibit seed germination and control invasive plants. The objectives of this study were to identify EFs present in the leaves of Copaifera oblongifolia and to evaluate the role of these fungi in seed germination and seedling development. A total of 11 species of EFs were isolated, which were identified using the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) sequence of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. The isolated species of EFs are generalists and probably are transmitted horizontally. Laboratory tests revealed that filtrates of these fungal isolates differently affect seed germination and seedling development of C. oblongifolia. The species Curvularia intermedia, Neofusicoccum parvum, Pseudofusicoccum stromaticum and Phomopsis sp. negatively affected seed germination, with N. parvum standing out for its negative effects, inhibiting seedling germination and survival in 89 and 222%, respectively. In addition, Cochliobolus intermedius negatively affected seedling development. Thus, the combined use of N. parvum and C. intermedius, or products from the metabolism of these microorganisms, in the control of invasive plants deserves attention from future studies.


As interações entre fungos endofíticos (FEs) e suas plantas hospedeiras variam de positivas, neutras a negativas. Os resultados destas interações podem variar dependendo do órgão da planta hospedeira infectada. FEs isolados de folhas de algumas espécies de plantas têm potencial para serem usados como agentes inibidores da germinação de sementes e no controle de plantas invasoras. Os objetivos deste estudo foram identificar os FEs presentes nas folhas de Copaifera oblongifolia e avaliar o papel destes fungos na germinação das sementes e no desenvolvimento das plântulas. Um total de 11 espécies de FEs foi isolado das folhas de C. oblongifolia e identificado através da sequência dos espaçadores internos transcritos do DNA ribossomal nuclear. As espécies de FEs isoladas são generalistas e provavelmente devem ser transmitidas horizontalmente. Os resultados dos testes de germinação mostraram que filtrados destes isolados fúngicos podem afetar diferentemente a germinação das sementes e o desenvolvimento das plântulas de C. oblongifolia. As espécies Curvularia intermedia, Neofusicoccum parvum, Pseudofusicoccum stromaticum e Phomopsis sp. afetaram negativamente a germinação das sementes de C. oblongifolia. Dentre estas espécies devemos destacar que N. parvum reduziu a germinação e a sobrevivência das plântulas em 89 e 222%, respectivamente. Além disso, Cochiliobolus intermedius afetou negativamente o desenvolvimento das plântulas. Assim, o uso combinado de N. parvum e C. intermedius, ou de produtos do metabolismo destas espécies de fungos, têm potencial para serem usados no manejo de plantas invasoras.

Salinity is one of the most limiting abiotic stresses in the global agricultural sector. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigation water salinity on the initial development of P. edulis Sims. seedlings propagated by seeds, grafting and cuttings. Treatments were distributed in a completely randomized design, in a 5 x 3 factorial arrangement, corresponding to 5 levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity (0.3 - control, 1.8, 3.3, 4.8, and 6.3 dS m-1) and 3 propagation methods (seeds, cuttings and grafting), with four replicates and one plant per plot. Fifty days after the imposition of treatments with saline water, plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, total chlorophyll, stomatal conductance, relative leaf water content, total water consumption, dry matter of root, shoot and total, root length and root volume were evaluated. The increase in water salinity affected with greater intensity the growth and development variables (height, total dry matter and root volume of the plant) and the physiological characteristics (stomatal conductance) of the species Passiflora edulis, regardless of the method of propagation. Seedlings propagated by grafting showed better development compared to the other propagation methods (seeds and cuttings). The interaction between the propagation methods and water salinity affected seedlings propagated by seeds and cuttings with greater intensity.

ABSTRACT

Aiming to compare morphofunctional features related to dispersion and establishment of plants, this study evaluated seed biometry and biomass, as well as germination and emergence potential in eight plant species native to the Semideciduous Seasonal Forest. Biometric measurements and biomass of seeds were obtained with a caliper and a precision scale.Afterwards, they were subjected to a germination test in BOD chambers under constanttemperature and 12hoursphotoperiod, and sown in styrofoam trays containing organic substrate and sand, kept in full sunlight.Data from germination and emergence was subjected to cluster analysis, according to the functional morphotype of the seedling.Most species presented seeds with a rounded shape, uniform staining at the mature stage, varied coat consistency, two types of dispersal syndromes (anemochory and zoochory) and four morphofunctional patterns in developing seedlings (crypto-hypogeal-storers, crypto-epigeal-storers, phanero-epigeal-storers and phanero-epigeal-foliaceous). The species belonging to group I (Albizia niopoides, Cedrela fissilis, Pterogyne nitensand Randia ferox) have foliaceous photosynthetic cotyledons and group II (Cabralea canjerana, Eugenia pyriformis, Inga laurinaand Poecilantheparviflora) have a reserve cotyledon. Species of group I had higher means in the percentage and rate of germination, less variability and amplitude of days for seedlings emergence. On the other hand, species of group II showed higher mean values in seed biometry and biomass. Thus, seeds with foliaceous cotyledons have an optimized development because of luminosity, whereas seeds with reserve tend to have slower development, remaining at the seedling stage for a longer time.

ABSTRACT

Polyembryony is the differentiation and development of multiple embryos in a single seed. This characteristic can provide advantages, as more than one embryo is produced with the same amount of resources, and the probability of establishment of at least one seedling increases. However, sibling seedlings may also increase competition, affecting development and survival. In the present study, the possible advantages and disadvantages of polyembryony were analyzed in the initial establishment of seedlings of Carapa surinamensis (Meliaceae), a tree species that produces monoembryonic or polyembryonic seeds. In this regard, the development of single seedlings was compared with a pair of seedlings emerging from polyembryonic seeds. We compared the development of seedlings attached to or detached from each other and to the seed resources. We observed two levels of competition: (a) for the seed reserves during germination and initial development, as multiple embryos of C. surinamensis share the same reserves, and (b) for external factors, mostly space for root and shoot development, and also for light. Reducing the competition for external factors by separating the siblings was not enough to reduce the effects of competition for seed reserves in the first six months of development. Nevertheless, viable seedlings were produced in all treatments. Thus, depending on sprout management in the nursery, the number of seedlings per seed can be significantly increased by detaching the seedlings, or more vigorous seedlings can be obtained when only one seedling is maintained.(AU)


Poliembrionia é a diferenciação e o desenvolvimento de múltiplos embriões em uma única semente. Esta característica pode proporcionar diversas vantagens, como aumentar o número de embriões produzidos com a mesma quantidade de recursos, e aumentar a probabilidade de estabelecimento de pelo menos uma plântula de uma única semente. Por outro lado, a competição entre plântulas pode aumentar, afetando seu desenvolvimento e sobrevivência. Neste estudo, foram analisadas as possíveis vantagens e desvantagens da poliembrionia em sementes de andiroba, Carapa surinamensis (Meliaceae), uma espécie arbórea que produz sementes monoembriônicas ou poliembriônicas. Comparamos o desenvolvimento de plântulas únicas com o de pares de plântulas provenientes de sementes poliembriônicas. As plântulas foram mantidas unidas ou separadas entre si e ligadas à ou destacadas da semente. Os resultados revelaram dois níveis de competição: (a) pelas reservas da semente durante a germinação e desenvolvimento inicial da plântula, quando embriões múltiplos de C. surinamensis compartilham as mesmas reservas, e (b) por fatores externos, principalmente espaço para o desenvolvimento da raiz e da parte aérea, e luz. A redução da competição por fatores externos, através da separação das plântulas, não foi suficiente para reduzir os efeitos da competição pelas reservas das sementes nos primeiros seis meses de desenvolvimento. Apesar disso, plântulas viáveis foram produzidas em todos os tratamentos. Assim, dependendo do manejo dos brotos em viveiro, o número de plântulas produzidas pode ser aumentado significativamente por meio da separação entre plântulas, ou o vigor das plântulas pode ser incrementado através de sua manutenção individualizada.(AU)

Secondary compounds have allelopathic action on germination and growth, and initial development of seedlings and beggar tick can have its germination and growth affected by the action of allelopathic extracts. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the allelopathic potential of Brachiaria (Brachiaria brizantha), sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and sorghum extracts (Sorghum bicolor) on germination and initial growth of beggar ticks (Bidens pilosa). For this, an experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with four treatments and six replicates and brachiaria, sunflower and sorghum extracts and control (distilled water) treatments. Extracts were obtained using 200 g of plant material and 1,000 mL of distilled water. Seeds were distributed in gerbox containing two sheets of germitest paper moistened with treatments and taken to germination chamber. Germination was daily monitored, and ten days after, initial growth was evaluated. Extracts did not reduce germination. However, they caused increase in germination time, mainly by brachiaria extract. Seedlings submitted to brachiaria and sorghum extracts showed lower growth. Brachiaria and sorghum extracts showed no action on germination, but controlled the initial growth of beggar tick, being potential natural herbicides.(AU)


Compostos secundários têm ação alelopática sobre a germinação, crescimento e desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas, e a Bidens pilosa pode ter sua germinação e crescimento afetados pela ação dos extratos alelopáticos. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se avaliar o potencial alelopático de extratos de braquiária (Brachiaria brizantha), girassol (Helianthus annus) e sorgo (Sorghum bicolor) na germinabilidade e no crescimento inicial de picão-preto (Bidens pilosa). Para isso foi instalado um experimento no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e seis repetições, sendo eles extrato de braquiária, girassol, sorgo e o controle (água destilada). Os extratos foram obtidos utilizando 200 g de material vegetal fresco para 1.000 mL de água destilada. As sementes foram distribuídas em caixa gerbox contendo duas folhas de papel germitest umedecidas com os tratamentos e levadas para a câmara de germinação. Foi acompanhada diariamente a germinação e, após 10 dias, foi avaliado o crescimento inicial. Os extratos não causaram prejuízos à germinação, porém, provocaram demora em seu tempo de eclosão, sendo o extrato de braquiária o mais prejudicial. As plântulas submetidas aos extratos de braquiária e sorgo apresentaram menor crescimento. Os extratos de braquiária e sorgo não apresentaram ação sobre a porcentagem de germinação das sementes de picão-preto, mas controlaram o crescimento inicial das plântulas e podem ser indicados para possíveis herbicidas naturais.(AU)

Abstract Various bird pests caused severe economic losses to valuable crops and fruit orchards all over the world. Among the birds, house sparrow is also considered to cause heavy plunder, not only to seeds of crops but also seedlings especially in organic farming. In present study two bird repellents, methylanthranilate and anthraquinone tested against house sparrows on maize seeds and seedlings in aviary conditions. Trial group in aviary-I, the treated maize seeds and seedlings with different doses of both bird repellents, control group in aviary-II, untreated seeds and seedlings were provided for three hours in the early morning. In each aviary, two closed circuit cameras were also installed to monitor the behavioral responses against different concentrations of both chemical repellents. Statistical analysis showed that there existed highly significant (P<0.01) variations among the trial and control groups for seeds and seedlings. By comparing both repellents, significant (P<0.05) differences were detected and anthraquinone showed better efficacy when compared to methylanthranilate, but in maize seedlings both repellents equal repellent properties. Non-significant (P>0.05) differences were observed in different grading of both natural chemical repellents for maize seeds while significant (P<0.05) variations were noticed for maize seedlings when provided to sparrows. By videotaped behavior sparrows presented manifest head juddering and feather upsetting activities by consumption of treated seeds and seedlings with higher concentrations of both natural bird repellents.


Resumo Várias pragas de aves causaram graves perdas econômicas para cultivos valiosos e pomares de frutas em todo o mundo. Entre os pássaros, o pardal da casa também é considerado um grande saqueo, não só para as sementes das culturas, mas também para as mudas, especialmente na agricultura orgânica. No presente estudo, dois repelentes de aves, metilantranilato e antraquinona testados contra pardais de casa em sementes de milho e mudas em condições de aviário. O grupo de ensaio em aviary-I, as sementes de milho tratadas e as mudas com diferentes doses de repelentes de aves, grupo de controle em aviary-II, sementes não tratadas e mudas foram fornecidas por três horas no início da manhã. Em cada aviário, duas câmeras de circuito fechado também foram instaladas para monitorar as respostas comportamentais contra diferentes concentrações de ambos os repelentes químicos. A análise estatística mostrou que existiam variações altamente significativas (P<0,01) entre os grupos de teste e controle para sementes e mudas. Ao comparar os dois repelentes, detectaram-se diferenças significativas (P<0,05) e a antraquinona apresentou maior eficácia quando comparada ao metilantranilato, mas em mudas de milho, ambos os repelentes são iguais às propriedades repelentes. As diferenças não significantes (P>0,05) foram observadas em diferentes classificações de repelentes químicos naturais para sementes de milho, enquanto as variações significativas (P<0,05) foram observadas para as mudas de milho quando fornecidas aos pardais. Por um comportamento gravado em video, os pardais apresentaram manifestações de cabeça e vibrações de penas por consumo de sementes tratadas e mudas com maiores concentrações de repelentes de aves naturais.

ABSTRACT

Resumen El estudio de la ecofisiología de las especies en peligro de extinción es clave para el éxito de programas de conservación y restauración ecológica. El objetivo de este trabajo fue conocer el efecto de los factores luz, fertilidad de suelo y procedencia de las plántulas en el crecimiento de plántulas de Magnolia pugana. Se estimó la tasa relativa de crecimiento (TRC) y sus componentes (Tasa de Asimilación Neta: TAN y Cociente del Área Foliar: CAF), así como la relación raíz/vástago (C: R/V). Las plántulas fueron obtenidas de semillas recolectadas de dos localidades en Zapopan, Jalisco, México, la primera es una población silvestre en San Nicolás (SN) y la segunda es una plantación ubicada en los jardines del Centro Universitario de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias (CUCBA). El experimento se llevó a cabo en condiciones de invernadero. En septiembre 2015, 96 plántulas de tres meses de edad fueron sometidas a los siguientes tratamientos con un experimento factorial (2 × 2 × 2): nivel de luz (alta = 1 120 μmol m-2 s-1 y baja = 136.3 μmol m-2 s-1), procedencia de las plántulas (San Nicolás y CUCBA) y fertilidad del suelo (alta = suelo San Nicolás, baja = suelo del CUCBA) con 12 repeticiones por cada combinación de factores y niveles. El crecimiento se estimó con dos cosechas: la primera a los 30 días de establecido el experimento y la segunda a los 60 días. Los niveles de luz, fertilidad del suelo y la procedencia de las plántulas influyeron en el crecimiento a través de ajustes fisiológicos y morfológicos. En general Magnolia pugana mostró mayor TRC y TAN en la luz alta, mientras que el CAF disminuyó. La fertilidad del suelo y la procedencia de las plántulas no afectaron la TRC ni sus componentes. Sin embargo, si fueron afectados por los niveles de luz, las plántulas de SN crecieron más en luz alta. La altura del tallo varió debido a la fertilidad del suelo y a la procedencia de las plántulas, en el suelo con fertilidad baja, en el suelo del CUCBA las plántulas de SN fueron 35 % más altas que las del CUCBA. El suelo de baja fertilidad en la luz alta ocasionó que las plántulas asignaran mayor biomasa a la raíz. El componente fisiológico (TAN) fue el mayor determinante en la variación intraespecífica de la TRC. Las plántulas de SN mostraron mayor plasticidad fenotípica debido a que es una población silvestre, por lo que posiblemente tiene variación genética más alta que la población cultivada del CUCBA. Los resultados sugieren que Magnolia pugana es una especie con capacidad de adaptarse a diversos ambientes debido a su plasticidad fenotípica frente a los distintos niveles de luz y fertilidad del suelo.


Abstract The study of ecophysiology of endangered species is key to the success of conservation and ecological restoration programs. The objective of this work was to know the effect of light, soil fertility and seed origin on the growth of Magnolia pugana seedlings. The relative growth rate (RGR) and its components (Net Assimilation Rate: NAR and Leaf Area Ratio: LAR), as well as the root-shoot ratio (R/S) were estimated. Seedlings were obtained from seeds collected in two localities in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, the first is a wild population in San Nicolás (SN) and the second is a plantation located in the gardens of the Centro Universitario de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias (CUCBA). The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions. In September 2015, 96 seedlings of approximately three months old were subjected to the following treatments in a factorial experiment (2x2x2): light level (high = 1 120 μmol m-2 s-1 and low = 136.3 μmol m-2 s-1), seedling origin (SN and CUCBA) and soil fertility (high fertility = SN soil, low fertility = CUCBA soil) with 12 replicates for each combination of factors and levels. Growth was estimated in two harvests: the first harvest after 30 days of starting the experiment and the second at 60 days. Light and soil fertility levels, as well as seedling origin influenced growth through physiological and morphological adjustments. In general, Magnolia pugana showed higher RGR and NAR in high light, while LAR decreased. Soil fertility and seedling origin did not affect RGR or its components. However, these were affected by the light level, seedlings from SN grew more in high light. Stem height varied due to soil fertility and seedling origin, in low fertility soil (CUCBA) the seedlings of SN were 35 % higher than those of CUCBA. Low fertility soil under high light caused greater investment in seedling root biomass. The physiological component (NAR) was the major determinant of intraspecific variation in RGR. SN seedlings showed greater phenotypic plasticity due to coming from a wild population, which possibly has higher genetic variation than the cultivated population from CUCBA. The results suggest that Magnolia pugana is a species capable of adapting to diverse environments due to its phenotypic plasticity in response to different light and soil fertility levels. Rev. Biol. Abstract Aspergillus sp., Fusarium sp., and Ramularia sp. were endophytic fungi isolated from Rumex gmelini Turcz (RGT), all of these three strains could produce some similar bioactive secondary metabolites of their host. However the ability to produce active components degraded significantly after cultured these fungi alone for a long time, and were difficult to recover. In order to obtain more bioactive secondary metabolites, the co-culture of tissue culture seedlings of RGT and its endophytic fungi were established respectively, and RGT seedling was selected as producer. Among these fungi, Aspergillus sp. showed the most significant enhancement on bioactive components accumulation in RGT seedlings. When inoculated Aspergillus sp. spores into media of RGT seedlings that had taken root for 20 d, and made spore concentration in co-culture medium was 1 × 104 mL-1, after co-cultured for 12 d, the yield of chrysophaein, resveratrol, chrysophanol, emodin and physcion were 3.52-, 3.70-, 3.60-, 4.25-, 3.85-fold of the control group. The extreme value of musizin yield was 0.289 mg, which was not detected in the control groups. The results indicated that co-culture with endophytic fungi could significantly enhance bioactive secondary metabolites production of RGT seedlings.

Abstract Arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) fungi play a crucial role in the growth of soybean; however, the planting system employed is thought to have an effect on AM fungal communities in the rhizosphere. This study was performed to explore the influence of continuous soybean cropping on the diversity of Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, and to identify the dominant AM fungus during the seedling stage. Three soybean cultivars were planted under two and three years continuous cropping, respectively. The diversity of AM fungi in the rhizosphere soil at the seedling stage was subsequently analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The results showed that an increase in cropping years improved the colonization rate of AM in all three soybean cultivars. Moreover, the dominant species were found to be Funneliformis mosseae and Glomus species. The results of cluster analysis further confirmed that the number of years of continuous cropping significantly affected the composition of rhizospheric AM fungal communities in different soybean cultivars.

ABSTRACT Salinity and alkalinity are major abiotic stresses that limit growth and development of poplar. We investigated biocontrol potential of saline- and alkaline-tolerant mutants of Trichoderma asperellum to mediate the effects of salinity or alkalinity stresses on Populus davidiana × P. alba var. pyramidalis (PdPap poplar) seedlings. A T-DNA insertion mutant library of T. asperellum was constructed using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated transformation system; this process yielded sixty five positive transformants (T1-T65). The salinity tolerant mutant, T59, grew in Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) containing up to 10% (1709.40 mM) NaCl. Under NaCl-rich conditions, T59 was most effective in inhibiting Alternaria alternata (52.00%). The alkalinity tolerant mutants, T3 and T5, grew in PDA containing up to 0.4% (47.62 mM) NaHCO3. The ability of the T3 and T5 mutants to inhibit Fusarium oxysporum declined as NaHCO3 concentrations increased. NaHCO3 tolerance of the PdPap seedlings improved following treatment with the spores of the WT, T3, and T5 strains. The salinity tolerant mutant (T59) and two alkalinity tolerant mutants (T3 and T5) generated in this study can be applied to decrease the incidence of pathogenic fungi infection under saline or alkaline stress.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT We attempted to study the compatibility among plant beneficial bacteria in the culture level by growing them near in the nutrient agar plates. Among all the bacteria tested, Rhizobium was found to inhibit the growth of other bacteria. From the compatible group of PGPR, we have selected one biofertilizer (Azospirillum brasilense strain TNAU) and one biocontrol agent (Pseudomonas fluorescens strain PF1) for further studies in the pot culture. We have also developed a bioformulation which is talc powder based, for individual bacteria and mixed culture. This formulation was used as seed treatment, soil application, seedling root dip and foliar spray in groundnut crop in vitro germination conditions. A. brasilense was found to enhance the tap root growth and P. fluorescens, the lateral root growth. The other growth parameters like shoot growth, number of leaves were enhanced by the combination of both of the bacteria than their individual formulations. Among the method of application tested in our study, soil application was found to be the best in yielding better results of plant growth promotion.

Abstract Flood events in riparian forests of southern Brazil, can be characterized as unpredictable and of low magnitude with an average duration of less than 15 days. Inga marginata is an evergreen tree which grows in Southeast South America on a wide range of environments, including riparian forests. In this paper, the interactive effects of the light environment and soil flooding on morphological parameters of I. marginata were examined. Seedlings were acclimated in two contrasting light conditions: sun or shade for 30 days. Sun and shade plants were subjected to soil flooding for two periods; five or 15 days. After 5 days, the interaction between flooding and light did not affect growth, chlorophyll content and dry mass or the root-shoot ratio. After 15 days, flooded plants from the sunny treatment had a lower shoot dry mass compared to control sun plants and flooded plants from the shaded treatment. Moreover, the higher dry mass observed for shade plants compared to sun plants, following flooding, can also be directly associated with a higher content of soluble sugars. Shade plants of I. marginata showed a greater acclimation to soil waterlogging. This acclimation appears to be associated with a larger accumulation of soluble sugars compared to non-flooded plants. The responses observed on the shade plants appear to be decisive to indicate the use of I. marginata in degraded areas.


Resumo As inundações em florestas ripárias do Sul do Brasil, podem ser caracterizadas como imprevisíveis e de baixa magnitude com uma duração média de menos de 15 dias. Inga marginata é uma árvore que cresce no sudeste da América do Sul em uma grande variedade de ambientes, incluindo matas ciliares. Neste trabalho, os efeitos combinados da luminosidade e do e alagamento do solo nos parâmetros morfológicos de I. marginata foram examinados. As plântulas foram aclimatadas em duas condições contrastantes de luminosidade: sol e sombra por 30 dias. Plantas de sol e sombra foram submetidas ao alagamento do solo por dois períodos; cinco ou 15 dias. Após 5 dias, a interação entre a inundação e luminosidade não afetou o crescimento, teor de clorofila e massa seca e a razão raiz-parte aérea. Após 15 dias, plantas de sol sob inundação apresentaram menor massa seca na parte aérea em relação as plantas controle de sol e as plantas alagadas de sombra. Além disso, a maior massa seca observada nas plantas de sombra em comparação com plantas de sol, sob inundação, pode ser diretamente associado com um maior teor de açúcares solúveis. Plantas de sombra de I. marginata mostraram uma maior aclimatação ao encharcamento do solo. Esta aclimatação parece estar associada com um maior acúmulo de açúcares solúveis em comparação com as plantas não-inundadas. As respostas observadas nas plantas de sombra parecem ser determinantes para a indicação do uso de I. marginata em áreas degradadas.

Abstract In order to obtain an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) native inoculum from Sierra de Moa and determine the most appropriate conditions for its big scale production, four light and temperature combinations were tested in three plant species (Calophyllum antillanum, Talipariti elatum and Paspalum notatum). Growth and development parameters, as well as the mycorrhizal functioning of the seedlings were evaluated. The natural light treatment under high temperatures (L-H) was the most suitable for the growth and development of the three plant species, showing the highest total biomass values, mainly of root, and a positive root-shoot ratio balance. This treatment also promoted higher values of root mycorrhizal colonization, external mycelium and AMF spore density. A total of 38 AMF species were identified among the plants and environmental conditions tested. Archaeospora sp.1, Glomus sp.5, Glomus brohultii and G. glomerulatum were observed in all the treatments. The L-H condition can be recommended for native inoculum production, as it promotes a better expression of the AM symbiosis and an elevated production of mycorrhizal propagules.

Introdução: a literatura tem descrito evidências sólidas de que as terapias de biocampo de imposição de mãos possuem eficácia clínica no tratamento complementar de várias doenças. O teste de germinação de sementes tem sido um método indicado na investigação de efeito fisiológico de terapias de biocampo de imposição de mãos porque possibilita tanto a supressão do efeito placebo quanto o escrupuloso controle das condições experimentais. Objetivo: determinar o índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE) de sementes de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris) tratadas com terapia de biocampo toque quântico. Método: Foi distribuída a amostra de 96 sementes de feijão equitativamente em dois grupos: Experimental (com tratamento de toque quântico durante 10 minutos antes da semeadura em substrato de latossolo vermelho escuro) e Controle (sem tratamento antes da semeadura em substrato de latossolo vermelho escuro). Resultado: não houve diferença significativa entre os IVE das sementes dos grupos Experimental e de Controle. Conclusão: concluiu-se que o toque quântico não teve efeito fisiológico sobre a velocidade de emergência de sementes de feijão. (AU)


Introduction: the literature has described solid evidence that hand-imposing biofields have clinical efficacy in the treatment of several diseases. Seed germination testing has been an indicated method in investigating the physiological effect of hand imposing biofields because it enables both the suppression of the placebo effect and the scrupulous control of experimental conditions. Objective: the purpose of this study was to determine the speed of emergence-index (SEI) of bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris) treated with quantum touch biofield therapy. Method: the sample of 96 bean seeds was distributed equitably in two groups: Experimental (with quantum touch treatment for 10 minutes before sowing on dark-red latosol substrate) and Control (without treatment before sowing on dark-red latosol substrate). Results: the results indicated that there was no significant difference between the SEI of the seeds of the Experimental and Control groups. Conclusion: In the present conditions, the quantum touch biofield therapy had no physiological effect on the speed of emergence of bean seeds. (AU)

Abstract:Successful forest restoration in tropical environments is limited by the paucity of studies on the initial establishment and early survival requirements of seedlings of most native tropical tree species under disturbed conditions. Here, we evaluated the initial growth responses and the regeneration potential of seedlings of five tree species native to Costa Rica (Hasseltia floribunda, Inga densiflora, Persea americana, Tapirira mexicana and Trichilia pittieri). Seedlings were grown in secondary forests and adjacent open pastures under contrasting conditions of light availability. We quantified seedling growth, survival and herbivory from August 2010 to August 2011 on a monthly basis, and measured differences in leaf mass per area (LMA) at the end of the experiment. We found significant variation in growth responses between the understory of secondary forests and pastures. Growth in height was highest in pastures across all species, with I. densiflora, P. americana and T. mexicana showing the most striking differences. In contrast, H. floribunda and T. pittieri did not show differences in diameter growth between environments. Except for T. mexicana, herbivory increased throughout the experiment in all the species. Herbivory increased faster in pastures for H. floribunda and T. pittieri and showed higher rates in the forest understory for I. densiflora and P. americana. Seedling survival showed significant differences for all species across environments. Survival of H. floribunda and I. densiflora was higher in secondary forests, whereas the other species showed higher survival in pastures. LMA showed higher values in the pastures across all species, showing that individuals exposed to high light conditions had great photosynthetic rate and great leaf construction capacity. Due to their rapid growth and high survival, I. densiflora and T. mexicana showed great potential to restore abandoned pastures and secondary forests. Increasing our knowledge on the response of seedlings under disturbed conditions in tropical ecosystems is critical for improving the restoration of altered environments by matching the ecological amplitude of native species with specific environmental conditions. Resumen:La restauración exitosa del bosque en ambientes tropicales está limitada por la carencia de estudios sobre los requisitos de hábitat, el establecimiento inicial, y la sobrevivencia de las plántulas de la mayoría de las especies de árboles tropicales nativos. En este estudio, evaluamos las respuestas en el crecimiento inicial y el potencial de regeneración de las plántulas de cinco especies de árboles nativos de Costa Rica (Hasseltia floribunda, Inga densiflora, Persea americana, Tapirira mexicana y Trichilia pittieri). Sembramos las plántulas en bosques secundarios y en pastizales abiertos adyacentes con condiciones de luz contrastantes. Cuantificamos el crecimiento, la supervivencia y el daño por herbivoría de las plántulas de forma mensual entre agosto 2010 y agosto 2011, y medimos las diferencias en el la masa foliar por área de la hoja al final del experimento. Existió una variación significativa en el crecimiento de las plántulas expuestas a la sombra en los bosques secundarios y aquellas que crecieron en pastizales. El crecimiento en altura fue mayor en pastizales en todas las especies; I. densiflora, P. americana y T. mexicana mostraron la mayor diferencia entre ambientes. En con- traste, H. floribunda y T. pittieri no mostraron diferencias en el crecimiento del diámetro entre ambientes. Con la excepción de T. mexicana, todas las especies mostraron un aumento en herbivoría durante el estudio. En los pastizales, el incremento de la herbivoría fue más rápido en H. floribunda y T. pittieri, mientras que para I. densiflora y P. americana fue mayor en el bosque. La sobrevivencia de plántulas fue diferente entre ambientes para todas las especies. La sobrevivencia de H. floribunda e I. densiflora fue mayor en el bosque secundario, mientras que en las demás especies hubo mayor sobrevivencia de plántulas en los pastizales. La masa foliar por área fue mayor en las plántulas que crecieron en los pastizales que en bosque secundario para todas las especies, lo que sugiere que los individuos que crecieron en condiciones de alta incidencia de luz tuvieron mayor tasa fotosintética y mayor capacidad de construcción de la hoja. Debido al rápido crecimiento y alta supervivencia I. densiflora y T. mexicana tienen gran potencial para la restauración de bosques secundarios y pastizales abandonados. Generar información sobre la respuesta de plántulas creciendo en bosques secundarios y pastizales en regeneración es crítico para mejorar los procesos de restauración de ambientes alterados. La restauración de estos bosques depende de la correspondencia entre las condiciones específicas de hábitat y la plasticidad ecológica de las especies nativas.

Abstract Individual leaf area (LA) is a key variable in studies of tree ecophysiology because it directly influences light interception, photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of adult trees and seedlings. We analyzed the leaf dimensions (length – L and width – W) of seedlings and adults of seven Neotropical rainforest tree species (Brosimum rubescens, Manilkara maxima, Pouteria caimito, Pouteria torta, Psidium cattleyanum, Symphonia globulifera and Tabebuia stenocalyx) with the objective to test the feasibility of single regression models to estimate LA of both adults and seedlings. In southern Bahia, Brazil, a first set of data was collected between March and October 2012. From the seven species analyzed, only two (P. cattleyanum and T. stenocalyx) had very similar relationships between LW and LA in both ontogenetic stages. For these two species, a second set of data was collected in August 2014, in order to validate the single models encompassing adult and seedlings. Our results show the possibility of development of models for predicting individual leaf area encompassing different ontogenetic stages for tropical tree species. The development of these models was more dependent on the species than the differences in leaf size between seedlings and adults.


Resumo Área foliar individual (AF) é uma variável chave em estudos sobre a ecofisiologia de arbóreas, porque influencia diretamente a interceptação de luz, a fotossíntese e a evapotranspiração das árvores adultas e das mudas. Foram analisadas as dimensões foliares (comprimento - C e largura - L) de indivíduos adultos e de mudas de sete espécies arbóreas de florestas neotropicais (Brosimum rubescens, Manilkara maxima, Pouteria caimito, Pouteria torta, Psidium cattleyanum, Symphonia globulifera e Tabebuia stenocalyx), com o objetivo de testar a viabilidade de modelos de regressão linear para estimar a AF de indivíduos adultos e mudas. No sul da Bahia, Brasil, um primeiro conjunto de dados foi coletado entre março e outubro de 2012. A partir das sete espécies analisadas, apenas duas (P. cattleyanum e T. stenocalyx) apresentaram relações muito semelhantes entre e AF e CL, em ambos os estádios ontogenéticos. Para estas duas espécies, um segundo conjunto de dados foi coletado em agosto de 2014, a fim de validar os modelos únicos que englobam folhas de indivíduos adultos e mudas. Nossos resultados mostram a possibilidade de desenvolvimento de modelos para a predição da área foliar, abrangendo diferentes estádios ontogenéticos para espécies arbóreas tropicais. O desenvolvimento destes modelos foi mais dependente das espécies do que das diferenças entre o tamanho das folhas de mudas e de indivíduos adultos.

AbstractMexico is dominated by arid or semi-arid ecosystems, predominantly characterized as xeric shrublands. These areas are frequently deteriorated due to agriculture or over-grazing by livestock (sheep and goats). The vegetation type mainly consists of thorny plant species, and among these, the dominant one in overgrazed areas is catclaw (Mimosa biuncifera). This is a nurse plant that facilitates establishment of other vegetation and promotes plant succession. Catclaw plants form a mutualistic association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which improves uptake of nutrients and water. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of inoculating catclaw plants with native AMF and starting their growth under a low water availability treatment in a greenhouse, and later transplanting them to field conditions of drought and deterioration. Field plants were evaluated according to their survivorship and growth. The seeds of catclaw plants and soil with AMF spores were collected in the Mezquital Valley of Hidalgo State, in Central Mexico. Seedlings were grown in individual pots in a greenhouse. The experimental design consisted of two levels of pot irrigation, wet (W) and dry (D), as well as the presence (M+) or absence (M-) of AMF inoculum, with 20 replicates for each treatment. The following plant parameters were recorded every week: height, number of leaves and pinnae, and mean diameter of coverage. After 20 weeks in the greenhouse, determination was made of fresh and dry biomass, relative growth rate (RGR), root/shoot ratio, real evapotranspiration (RET), water-use efficiency (WUE), and percentage of mycorrhizal colonization. The remaining plants growing under the dry treatment (M+ and M-) were then transplanted to a semi-arid locality in the Mezquital Valley. During one year, monthly records were kept of their height, number of leaves, mean diameter of coverage and survival. Results showed that compared to greenhouse plants under other treatments, those under the wet mycorrhizal (WM+) treatment were taller, had more pinnae, and were characterized by greater coverage, faster RGR, and greater fresh and dry biomass. Moreover, inoculated plants (WM+ and DM+) showed higher WUE than those uninoculated (WM- and DM-, respectively). After one year in field conditions, there was a higher survival rate for previously inoculated versus uninoculated plants. Hence, mycorrhization of M. biuncifera with native AMF inoculum increased plant efficiency in biomass production, thus favoring establishment and survival in field conditions. ResumenMás de la mitad del territorio mexicano está dominado por ecosistemas áridos y semiáridos. El principal tipo de vegetación de estos ambientes son matorrales xerófilos y normalmente están deteriorados por agricultura y sobrepastoreo de ovejas y cabras inducido por la actividad humana. Las plantas espinosas dominan en estas zonas, como el gatuño (Mimosa biuncifera Benth., Fabaceae), que es una planta nodriza que promueve la sucesión vegetal. Las plantas de gatuño forman junto con hongos micorrizógenos arbusculares (HMA), una asociación mutualista llamada micorriza arbuscular que mejora la captación vegetal de nutrimentos y agua. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar el efecto de la inoculación con HMA nativos en plantas de gatuño, para evaluar su crecimiento y establecimiento bajo un tratamiento de baja disponibilidad hídrica, tanto en condiciones de invernadero como de campo. Para esto, se recolectaron semillas de Mimosa biuncifera y suelo con esporas de HMA en el Valle del Mezquital, estado de Hidalgo, en el Centro de México. Las plántulas fueron cultivadas en macetas individuales en condiciones de invernadero bajo un diseño experimental que consistió en dos tratamientos de riego de las macetas, húmedo (W) y seco (D), y dos tratamientos de inoculación: con y sin inóculo de HMA (M+, M-). Cada tratamiento tuvo 20 repeticiones. Semanalmente se registró altura, diámetro medio de la cobertura y número de hojas y pinnas de las plantas. Después de 20 semanas, se determinaron biomasa húmeda y seca, tasa relativa de crecimiento (TRC), proporción raíz vástago, evapotranspiración real, eficiencia en el uso del agua (WUE) y porcentaje de colonización micorrícica. Posteriormente, los individuos del tratamiento seco (M+ y M-) fueron trasplantados a una localidad semiárida en el Valle del Mezquital, donde la altura, número de hojas y supervivencia fueron registrados mensualmente durante un año. Los resultados muestran que las plantas en el tratamiento húmedo y micorrizado (WM+) tuvieron una mayor altura, cobertura vegetal, biomasa húmeda y seca, TRC y más pinnas que las plantas de los otros tratamientos; también los tratamientos micorrizados (WM+ y DM+) tuvieron mayor WUE que la plantas sin inóculo (M-). En condiciones de campo, después de un año, la supervivencia de las plantas M+ fue mayor que en los testigos. Se concluyó que la micorrización de M. biuncifera con inóculo nativo incrementa su eficiencia en la producción de biomasa y favorece el establecimiento y supervivencia en condiciones de campo. Finalmente, se recomienda la inoculación de plantas de gatuño con HMA en programas de revegetación de zonas semiáridas deterioradas.

ABSTRACT

Curcuma longa é uma espécie asiática perene e rizomatosa com grandes propriedades medicinais, alimentícias e ornamentais. No processo micropropagativo carece de muitas informações dentre a faixa espectral mais adequada ao seu desenvolvimento. Sendo assim, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar diferentes filmes espectrais no desenvolvimento de plântulas de C. longa cultivadas in vitro. Para tanto, brotações de C. longa foram inoculadas em meio Murashig e Skoog e suplementado com 30 g/L de sacarose, 6,5 g/L de ágar 4, 44 µM/L de Benzil aminopurina (BAP) e 1,08 µM/L ácido naftaleno acético (ANA). O pH do meio foi ajustado para 5,8. Os brotos foram submetidos a diferentes intensidades e qualidade espectral de luz: branco, vermelho, amarelo, azul e verde. As plântulas foram mantidas em sala de crescimento em luz constante de 25C° e fotoperíodo de 24 horas por 145 dias. Foram avaliadas características morfológicas e anatômicas. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que as diferenças espectraris propiciaram diferenças no desenvolvimento das plântulas de C. longa e também na contaminação in vitro. O diâmetro da base das plântulas, a massa seca e fresca da parte área e raiz foram influenciadas pelas diferentes faixas espectrais, sendo que de modo geral os filmes, amarelo e branco foram os que propiciaram maiores valores para essas características. Já o filme verde foi o que menos favoreceu o ganho de massa das plântulas, além disso, alta taxa de contaminação foi observada na presença desse filme.


Curcuma longa is a perennial Asiatic rhizomelic species with important medicinal, food and ornamental properties. However, its micro-propagation process lacks information regarding the most adequate spectral range for its development. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate different spectrum films in the development of in vitro C. longa seedlings. In order to do this, C. longa sprouts were inoculated in Murashig and Skoog media supplemented with 30 g/L of sucrose, 6.5 g/L of agar 4, 44 µM/L of benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 1.08 µM/L naphthalene acetic acid (ANA). The pH was adjusted to 5.8. Sprouts were put under different light spectrum intensity and quality: white, red, yellow, blue and green. The seedlings were maintained in a growth room with constant light at 25 ºC and a 24-hours photoperiod for 145 days. Morphological and anatomical characteristics were analyzed. The results demonstrated that spectral differences propitiated differences in the development of C. longa seedlings, and also in the in vitro contamination. The seedling base diameter, aerial and root dry and fresh mass were influenced by the different spectral ranges, with the yellow and white ranges being those that resulting the highest values for each characteristic. The green spectrum was the least favorable for the seedling regarding mass gain, as well as presenting the highest contamination rate.


Curcuma longa es una especie rizomélica asiática perenne con grandes propiedades medicinales, alimenticias y ornamentales. En el proceso de micropropagación no se dispone de informaciones sobre el rango espectral más adecuado para su desarrollo. Así, el objetivo de ese trabajo fue evaluar distintos espectros en el desarrollo de plántulas de C. longa cultivadas in vitro. Para esto, se inocularon los brotes de C. longa en medio Murashig y Skoog suplementados con 30 g/L de sacarosa, 6,5 g/L de agar 4, 44 µM/L de Benzilaminopurina (BAP) y 1,08 µM/L de ácido naftaleno acético (ANA). El pH de lo medio fue ajustado para 5.8. Los brotes fueron sometidos a diferentes intensidades y calidad de espectro luz: blanco, rojo, amarillo, azul y verde. Las plántulas se mantuvieron en un salón de crecimiento con luz constante a 25ºC y fotoperiodo de 24 horas durante 145 días. Se evaluaron características morfológicas y anatómicas. Los resultados obtenidos demostraron que las diferencias espectrales propiciaron diferencias en el desarrollo de plántulas de C. longa y sobre la contaminación in vitro. El diámetro de la base de las plántulas, la masa seca y fresca de la parte aérea y raíces fueron influenciadas por los diferentes rangos espectrales, siendo que el amarillo y el blanco fueron los que propiciaron valores más altos para esas características. La película verde fue la menos favorable a la plántula en gano de masa, además, alta tasa de contaminación se ha observado en la presencia de esa película.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Prunella vulgaris L. is a medical plant cultivated in sloping, sun-shaded areas in China. Recently, owing to air-environmental stress, especially drought stress strongly inhibits plant growth and development, the appropriate fertilizer supply can alleviate these effects. However, these is little information about their effects on P. vulgaris growing in arid and semi-arid areas with limited water and fertilizer supply. RESULTS: In this study, water stress decreased the photosynthetic pigment contents, inhibited photosynthetic efficiency, induced photodamage in photosystem 2 (PS2), and decreased leaf instantaneous WUE (WUEi). The decreased net photosynthetic rate (Pn) under medium drought stress compared with the control might result from stomatal limitations. However, fertilizer supply improved photosynthetic capacity by increasing the photosynthetic pigment contents and enhancing photosynthetic efficiency under water deficit. Moreover, medium fertilization also increased WUEi under the two water conditions, but fertilizer supply did little to alleviate the PS2 photodamage caused by drought stress. Hence, drought stress was the primary limitation in the photosynthetic process of P. vulgaris seedlings, while the photosynthetic characteristics of the seedlings exhibited positive responses to fertilizer supply. CONCLUSIONS: Appropriate fertilizer supply is recommended to improve photosynthetic efficiency, enhance WUEi and alleviate photodamage under drought stress.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Uniform rapid seed germination generally forms a great risk for the plant population if subsequent intermittent precipitation causes desiccation and seedling death. Handroanthus impetiginosus can be found commonly in a wide range of biomes within Brazil including those that are semi-arid. Germination and early growth was studied to understand how germinated seeds survive under these stringent conditions. Accessions were sampled from four seasonally dry biomes in Brazil. Precipitation at the start of the rainy season in the Caatinga, a semi-arid biome, is less predictable and the number of successive dry days per dry interval in the first four months of the rainy season was higher than in the other studied biomes. Plants from the Caatinga produced thicker seeds and this trait concurred with slow germination and stronger osmotic inhibition of germination across the accessions, forming a stress avoidance mechanism in the Caatinga. Post-germination desiccation tolerance was high in the Caatinga accession, could be re-induced in accessions from biomes with more regular precipitation (Cerrado and transition zone), but remained poor in the Cerradão accession; thus forming a stress tolerance mechanism. Production of adventitious roots ascertained survival of all tested individuals from all four locations, even if protruded radicles did not survive desiccation, forming an additional stress tolerance mechanism. A sequence of stress avoidance and stress tolerance mechanisms in seeds and germinated seeds was associated with precipitation patterns in different biomes. These mechanisms purportedly allow rapid seedling establishment when conditions are suitable and enable survival of the young seedling when conditions are adverse.


Resumo A germinação rápida e uniforme geralmente pode apresentar riscos para a população de plantas caso a precipitação ocorra de maneira intermitente, provocando seca e morte das plântulas. Handroanthus impetiginosus pode ser encontrado em uma grande variedade de biomas no Brasil. A germinação e o crescimento inicial das plântulas de Handroanthus impetiginosus foram estudadas para compreender como as sementes germinadas sobrevivem nestas condições. Acessos de quatro biomas que apresentam secas sazonais foram amostrados. A precipitação, no início da estação chuvosa na Caatinga, um bioma semi-árido, é menos previsível e o número de dias secos consecutivos por intervalo de seca, nos primeiros quatro meses da estação chuvosa, foi maior do que nos outros biomas estudados. Plantas do bioma Caatinga produzem sementes mais espessas e essa característica está associada com uma germinação lenta e com a inibição osmótica maior da germinação através dos acessos, formando um mecanismo para evitar o estresse. Tolerância à dessecação em sementes germinadas foi superior no bioma Caatinga e que podem ser reinduzida em acesso com uma precipitação mais regular (Cerrado e na zona de transição), mas manteve-se baixa no acesso Cerradão, formando assim um mecanismo para evitar o estresse. Produção de raízes adventícias foi observada nos indivíduos estudados de todos os quatro biomas, mesmo quando as raízes primárias não sobreviveram à dessecação, formando um mecanismo adicional de tolerância ao estresse. Assim, foi observado estratégias para evitar o estresse e mecanismos de tolerância ao estresse em sementes e sementes germinadas associada com padrões de precipitação nos diferentes biomas estudados. Estes mecanismos podem favorecer o estabelecimento das plântulas de forma rápida quando as condições são adequadas e permitirem a sobrevivência de plântulas quando as condições são adversas.
